The first member started queuing at the Sydney Cricket Ground at 3am in the pouring rain, patiently waiting to bag his favourite seat in the house.

You can understand why. The SCG is the best cricket ground in Australia, the closest thing to Lord’s with its history, charm and exorbitant prices for a glass of Pimms. But it has its own modern ... as home of the Pink Test in support of the Glenn McGrath Foundation, jordans for cheap,http://www.appsmapper.com/iphonecheapjordanshoesfreeshipping.com/bolg. On Saturday the whole ground will be flooded with pink. It will look like the setting of a Disney princess movie.

There were 44,874 watching the first day’s play, half that of the Boxing Day crowd but just right for a cricket match. The vast MCG is breathtaking when packed to the rafters on Boxing Day, but desolate and sterile when a quarter full by day five.

Sydney is different thanks to its pavilions. It looks like a cricket ground even when there is nobody here. But its status as a cricket venue first and foremost is under threat like never before and was evident on Thursday. This Test is the first match played at the ground this season, apart from one Big Bash game.

It is why there was the unusual sight of a cricket square at a Test match with no bare, cheap air jordans, old pitches that you would expect when the season is two months old. The outfield was reseeded at the end of the Aussie Rules season, cheap jordans online, such was the pounding it took in the winter, cheap real jordans, which forced New South Wales to play their early Shield games at club grounds around Sydney while the grass grew.

When Usman Khawaja dived in the outfield after tea he took a huge gouge out of the surface with his knee and it was slow all day, revealing the cricketing cost of hosting Aussie Rules.

The MCC is here for a meeting of its World Cricket Committee, good timing given one of the ideas being considered by the club’s energetic new chief executive, Guy Lavender, is the use of drop-in pitches. Lord’s pitches have been dull for too long and making them more sporting is one of Lavender’s aims as the club looks to finally focus on cricket after years of arguments over its redevelopment.

Drop-ins have been given an awful rap in Australia over the past few days after the International Cricket Council rated the pitch for the Boxing Day Test as ‘poor’. It was a humiliating judgement for the MCG, the world’s oldest Test venue, but potentially timely for the authorities in Sydney where there is increasing pressure to use drop-in pitches.

British sports fans will find it unbelievable that Sydney is knocking down its Olympic Stadium after just 18 years and planning to rebuild it at a cost ?1.16bn. The Allianz Stadium next to the SCG, which is a geriatric 30 years old, is also set for demolition. If that happens - and work could start next year - it will put extra pressure on the SCG which will host Aussie Rules and rugby league matches that would have been played in Homebush or next door.

It means there is little chance of red-ball cricket being played at the SCG before the Test match in January while the ground recovers from its winter ordeal.

The Sydney Swans AFL team recently signed a new 30-year deal to play at the SCG and have made no secret of their wish for a drop-in cricket pitch. They call the shots like never before.

At the moment the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust is resisting the pressure and it would be a shame if that changed because when England return in four years’ time only Sydney and Brisbane will be natural cricket wickets.

The Waca will have been replaced by the Optus Stadium, where they are hoping to develop a drop-in that will replicate the bounce of the old ground, but few believe that will be possible. Dennis Lillee, Western Australia’s most famous cricketing son, resigned from the Waca Trust over the decision to move and condemn his pitch to Ashes history.

Even the Gabba has lost its zip, with the pitch for the opening Ashes Test this summer one of the slowest ever seen at the ground. It was blamed on the weather and the damage caused by an Adele concert earlier in the year (“Pommie singer’s attempt to sabotage Aussie cricket fortress” is the best intro of the tour so far in an Australian paper). Queensland’s Sports Minister has not ruled out a drop-in in the future.

The lifeless portable pitches have contributed to a dour series which can be summed up by the few slip catches taken by either side, despite the pace in the Australian team.

When the covers were peeled back here, and the mottled green surface revealed, it was clear this was going to be a better Test. The turn extracted by Lyon on day one was ominous. A natural cricket pitch will deteriorate for the spinner, creating an ebb and flow for the match. The drop-in at the MCG never changed its character, which is acceptable for T20 but a death sentence for a Test match. Drop-ins are rock hard too, cheap jordans for sale, which is why James Anderson is complained of “barking” ankles in his Telegraph column this week,http://www.kiteaway.co.il/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=106365cheapjordanshoesfreeshipping.com/bolg.

Sydney has a charm beyond other Australian grounds. At the heart of that is its pitch. Change that and they may as well knock down the pavilions as well and make it like all the other multi-purpose Australian stadiums. No point queuing up at 3am in that case, cheap retro jordans.
