Flood the pipeline

It stands to reason,cheap-jordan.net, says Kieran Snyder, CEO and co-founder of Textio,www.cheap-jordan.net, a machine learning platform that analyzes language patterns, that if you reach a wider pool of applicants (including women and candidates from underrepresented groups), you're much more likely to have more applicants which, in turn, improves diversity and speeds up the recruiting and hiring process.

"When you're not excluding half of your potential applicant pool, not limiting it to one demographic, then the roles fill much more quickly. What we see when analyzing around 50 million of our clients' job postings is that removing gendered language means these vacancies are filled,www.bcheapjordans.com, on average, two weeks faster," Snyder says.

And recent data from ZipRecruiter backs up the assertion that gender-neutral language can help companies attract a more diverse talent pool and fill vacancies faster, cheap real jordans.

"When employers write job descriptions the goal is that the person with the right skills and experience will read the job ad and apply. What we found was that many employers were lowering their chances at finding the right candidate and didn't even realize it. When gendered language is removed from the equation, real cheap jordans retro, companies are left with a higher chance of scoring the best candidate for the job. We found that neutral wording in job listings resulted in 42 percent more applicants than listings that contained gendered

The competition for skilled IT professionals, jordans for cheap, already intense, cheap air jordans, is set to get fierce. Just look at the companies on this years Best Places to Work in IT list: 64% said they plan to increase their U.S.-based IT staffs this year, by 7% on average. And more than one in six (17%) of more than 1,cheap jordan shoes,400 CIOs surveyed for the quarterly Robert Half Technology IT Hiring Index and Skills Report said they plan to add full-time IT staffers in this years third quarter, while only 2% said they anticipate personnel reductions.

In the current competitive landscape, smart businesses recognize that to recruit and retain the best IT workers, they must go beyond standard compensation and benefits. A way to do that thats sometimes overlooked is to establish and maintain a strong organizational identity.

Businesses that have set themselves up as employers of choice that is, companies whose names alone immediately evoke terms such as innovative, prestigious or cutting-edge have a much easier time bringing top talent on board.

Workers who value those or similar attributes tend to think of these employers first when considering a career move. A positive reputation also helps maintain loyalty among existing employees, cheap real jordans, who enjoy the feeling of being envied by peers at other companies. Perhaps most important, cheap jordans, efforts to reinforce company identity when theyre executed consistently and clearly have a tendency to snowball, requiring less deliberate effort from above.

After failing to gain market traction with its first iteration of hybrid drives three years ago, Seagate today announced a new hard-disk and solid-state combination drive with as much as 500GB of capacity, with a 250GB model starting at $113.

While Seagate's last attempt to market a hybrid drive focused on energy savings, jordans for cheap, its new Momentus XT is all about performance and capacity, cheap jordans free shipping.

The drive includes software that tracks a person's use trends and then uses the SSD component of the drive to optimize performance, cheap jordans online, and it can adjust that performance over time with changes in user behavior.

The Momentus XT is a 7200-rpm Serial ATA hard disk drive combined with 4GB of SSD capacity and 32MB of DDR3 cache memory. Seagate did not provide read/write speeds on the drive,cheap-jordan.net.

The combination, Seagate said, blows by traditional 7,200-rpm and 10,000-rpm hard disk drives for read and write speeds and nearly matches pure-SSD performance.

"We heard loud and clear from our users' feedback [on our last hybrid drive] that our next drive had better be a high-performance one," said Mark Wojtasiak, senior product marketing manager at Seagate.

Seagate said it tested the Momentus

Today, Opera again argued that it's included an ad blocker because customers want a faster browser. "We do this because we want to provide people with the fastest browsers in the market, cheap air jordans," asserted Opera CEO Lars Boilesen in a statement. "Our speed test shows that online ads slow down the browsing experience."

But in March, Krystian Kolondra, who leads Opera's engineering, jordans for cheap, said that the Norwegian-made browser was integrating a blocker not only to accelerate rendering -- an obvious result of dropping any page content -- but also for evangelical reasons.

"The [ad] industry should be making sure that ads are not ruining the user experience," said Kolondra in a March 10 interview. He also noted ad industry claims that it is working on creating ad types that are less intrusive and come with a smaller rendering penalty, but wondered, "Where are those better ads? If we could accelerate this change, cheap jordans online, there wouldn't be a need for ad blocking."

The increase in browser-based ad blocking has raised the temperature of a long-running dispute between some users and many privacy advocates on one hand, cheap jordans, and online advertisers on the other. The former cite the overwhelming number of ads on many sites and the tracking those ads perform, while the latter -- and the content publishers and service providers that rely on ad dollars -- claim that blockers are stealing money out of their pockets.

Rubin noted that the perfect business-oriented e-reader would have the wireless connectivity of the Kindle and the power of a tablet PC. However, he added that it also would need better search capability and support for both PDF and HTML.

One key roadblock to adoption is that e-book vendors are focusing on consumers, not on business. As a result, many books on the New York Times bestseller list are, or soon will be,cheap jordans for sale, available as e-books, but that isn't the case for thrillers such as The Field Manual For Satellite Dish Realignment. One reason for that is the widespread use of other types of devices.

"For vertical market apps, a tablet PC or good old notebook PC might be better, cheap jordan shoes," Gartner's McGuire said.

Another issue could be called the consumer-first policy for technology adoption in the enterprise. As was the case with the iPod,cheap jordans online, Wi-Fi and Skype, cheap retro jordans, support within companies for new types of devices often evolves only after employees start using those devices on their own for work-related tasks. Given that tendency, enterprises may well wait for e-readers to be used more widely by consumers.

"As folks buy these devices, enterprises will begin to publish to them -- as we've seen with the iPod," said Melissa Webster, an analyst at IDC.

Yet another problem blocking the e-reader's path into business is poor graphics quality. For instance, NPD's Rubin, who tested the Kindle, cheap jordan shoes, said he was disappointed when reading an e-book by Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert. Graphs and images available to readers of the paper version were missing from the e-book,cheap jordans, he said.

To address this failing, Adobe Systems Inc., the vendor behind the PDF format, is introducing an e-book software suite with enhanced graphics.

If you’re curious about the analytics trends that are most likely to impact enterprise IT in 2016,?Information Management’s take?is a smart read. There are six trends in total, ranging from data security to Internet of Things (IoT),cheap jordans, and data science—and each of them presents powerful challenges to your enterprise data architecture. The bottom line is that?these aren’t challenges you fix with an application or a one-off project, cheap air jordans. IT managers and architects who are responsible for managing the data involved in these trends need a scalable data management architecture to support these innovations.

Even if you can’t make a single, transformative investment to evolve your data architecture, you can still tackle each challenge in a way that moves you a little closer to that vision. Let’s take a look at each of the trends and how it will challenge your data architecture.

1.?Cyber security: Offense can be the best defense.,cheap jordans for sale?A perimeter defense of the enterprise won’t cut it. Data moves, flows, and is transformed and combined. Ken Schneider, vice president of technology strategy at software security company Symantec,www.bcheapjordans.com, believes digital certificates will be key to providing privacy while also allowing crucial driving data to be gathered. O MONSTERS

By Toby Zinman

For the Inquirer

Whit MacLaughlins new show, O Monsters: first draft, is dazzling. Puzzling, but dazzling. Utilizing the talents of four remarkable actors, he seems to have undertaken nothing less than a theatrical meditation on the mysterious and dangerous universe human beings inhabit. Bhob Rainey composed a hair-raising sound design and also partnered in the shows conception.

Devised theater is a play without a playwright. The cast and director develop a show around a topic or an idea, and then the collaborative improvised result is fixed for the rest of the run. This is a growing trend in the theatre world, with understandably varying results. New Paradise Laboratories, under MacLaughlins artistic direction, has been the local pioneer in this kind of theater-making.

The "idea" they worked on was described to me in this way:

"Drawing from sources as varied as derivatives trading, probability equations, chance, mutation, weird fiction, robotics, and sports, O Monsters keeps NPL's tradition of radically experimental performance alive... Bhob Rainey uses aleatoric processes informed by computer signals to create the signature soundscape."

This vocabulary-challenging missive was accompanied by photos of people in their underwear with plastic bags on their heads standing in the woods, cheap jordans for sale.

But in the event, watching O Monsters turns out to be far more accessible that that sounds, teasing us with funny devices (green bouncy-balls fall from the ceiling) and terrifying devices ( bubble-wrapping mother) and weird devices (a robotic spider delivers a banana). Some of the effects are astounding: a wall moves, jordans for cheap, revealing the next door restaurant; a black curtain opens to reveal the world outside the theaters huge windows at the corner of Race and Columbus Blvd. The creators of these startling effects are: Maria Shaplin (lighting), Matt Saunders (set ) and Alice Crosby (props).

Kate Czajokowski plays Moth (short for Mother?); her face is touchingly expressivetolerant, amused, angryas she regards her children and speaks to an empty chair,yourcellan.com, their father, whom she "misses terribly." Emilie Krause, Kevin Meehan and Matteo Scammell portray her triplets who are fearful, naughty, and hungry, dangerous. The actors physical presence and their precision timing are remarkable.

The family of monsters has a ritual game: wooden tiles with words printed on them fall from above, and Moth chooses them at random and tries to make meaning. And then I realized that was exactly what we were doing, too, and so meaning begins to emerge.

It is the execution of these elusive ideas that most impresses. Joyce Carol Oates once said, "How else can we speak of the unspeakable, except through the prism of technique." Plenty of technique here.

Some of the world's great wine values now are coming from Portugal's rising dry wine industry, and this 2013 Vinha do Rosário red from Casa Ermalinda Freitas is a stellar example. Grown in the sandy soil vineyards of the Fernando Pó region on the Setubal Peninsula just south of Lisbon, this wine is a blend of Castel?o and Touriga Nacional - two classic Portuguese port grapes - with syrah and cabernet sauvignon.

It's ready to drink young, with dark ruby and blueberry fruit flavors framed by firm but velvety tannins and a soft finish of barrel vanilla, plus a hint of mocha. It's an easy sipper and flexible food wine by any standard. But the best part is that it's marked down to $9.99 from a $20 list price by Pennsylvania's good old Chairman Selection program, which makes it a good candidate for an all-purpose house wine to buy by the case.

sound fun anymore. Too much government overreach. Teachers can't do what they think is best for their students. The stress of the job is what made me decide to retire when I did. I taught elementary school for 32 years and retired last year. When I started teaching, I loved it because students and parents were respectful. We had time to do fun things like school musicals, dance programs, and art projects. I had a life outside of school and on the weekends I had time to ski, hike, and do things that bring me joy. By the end of my career, I had to spend hours each week entering data on the computer, going to extra meetings, and being forced to join yet another committee to plan extra meetings. The extra hoops the legislature added each years just added to the stress. I had many more special needs students, jordans for cheap, but no extra support. Teachers need smaller classes and sometimes classroom aids so that they can do their job. I substituted a bit during the last school year, cheap air jordans, but that is even more stressful than it was when I began teaching in the 80's. The only children I want to teach now are my grandchildren, cheap jordans free shipping, and I worry for them, especially the ones who live in Utah. I taught for five years before No Child Left Behind. Back in those days, teaching was fun and rewarding. I still worked 50 hours a week and worked another summer job to help make ends meet, cheap jordans for sale, even though I spent quite a bit of time in my classroom in the summer as well. But I loved it! I think the difference was, I was motivated to help my students succeed. I was always researching and looking into new ways to improve my teaching. I wasn't required to teach to a test. I just had to teach the core curriculum. As teachers, we worked together and supported each other. Our principal was very supportive and encouraging. It was a positive environment. Of course there was one teacher in the school who I felt shouldn't be there. But somehow we need to figure out how to fire the very few horrible teachers and then let the rest of the teachers do their jobs. I left teaching to raise my kids. Now that my kids are in school, and I am deciding whether or not I want to return to teaching. Teachers in Utah are awesome! They provide a high quality education as shown in NAEP testing results compared the rest of the nation. We are a top 15 state and getting better each year. It is absolutely embarrassing that we don't pay our teachers better for the great work they are doing! It is also embarrassing to see the amount of teacher bashing that goes on. Utah is also the second lowest in administration costs per student in the nation, cheap jordans online, and way below nation average. The amount of work I see my kid's principals do and the crap they have to deal with shows me they are worth every penny. The fact of the matter is our schools are pretty dang good and that is a result of hard working teachers. My kids go to a low income school (Title 1), and I am amazed at how hard the teachers work there for the benefit of all the students. So, from this parent, Thank You Teachers!! I made it 30 years in the profession. Had I known 45 years ago what I know now, I would have never made the choice to teach. The pay was not adequate to maintain a family. The parents perception of teachers was deplorable. The support of administrators was equally lacking. The amount of testing was ridiculous. The hours to improve my education were necessary and totally subsidized by me. But that was worth it. The students adored me, for the most part.

Earlier this week, rapper B.o.B attempted to prove the earth is flat by using a South Jersey landmark - Apple Pie Hill in the Pinelands - as a key example. The assertion caused not only Neil deGrasse Tyson to publicly denounce the claim, but now, even Derrick Pitts, the Franklin Institute's chief astronomer is labeling B.o.B's statement 'idiotic.'

Because, not only is the rapper wrong on so many levels but it turns out the photo he used attempting to prove his point wasn't even really taken from Apple Pie Hill, according to the man who snapped it.

First, some background. In a series of tweets about his flat-earth assertion, B.o.B posted a picture of Apple Pie Hill, which at 205 feet tall is a high point in the otherwise flat lanscape in Wharton State Forest, Burlington County. A 60-foot high fire tower stands atop the hill.

But, Bradley Maule, who took the picture, disputes that it was taken from the hill.

"The photo he used is from a helicopter ride I took over North Jerseey and NYC," says Maule, owner of Phillyskyline.com, where the photo originated. "Its a little blurry because we were flying pretty fast and wed closed the hatch, which is curved, which is hard to shoot through."

Props to @bobatl for using my pic for science. Except that pic is from a helicopter, not the Pine Barrens.

Bradley Maule (@BradleyMaule) January 26, 2016

Maule estimates that that photo was actually taken about 75 miles northeast of Philadelphia, not the 40 miles provided in the example.

It should, cheap jordan shoes, however, be noted that the Philadelphia skyline is still viewable from the real Apple Pie Hill, though it is much less clear than B.o.B.s example lets on.

Apple Pie Hill or not, just the absurd claim the earth was flat caused Neil deGrasse Tyson to lambaste B.o.B.

Even Franklin Institutes chief astronomer, Derrick Pitts, has chimed in, saying even if the picture were of Apple Pie Hill, math otherwise proves the earth is a sphere.

"For real? Were really going to bother to talk about this?" Pitts said of B.o.B.s statement. "Theres plenty of room on the planet for idiots also."

Not only was this pic below showing the Apple Pie Hill view with Philly in background wrong, but so is the math cited, according to Pitts:

pic.twitter.com/60bQKOILuY

B.o.B (@bobatl) January 25, 2016

The Earths surface curves about 8 inches in one mile, meaning that the purported "335 feet of curvature" over the 40-mile distance between Apple Pie Hill and Philadelphia touted in the tweet is actually somewhat underestimated. The overall curvature is about 1,067 feet:

8 inches per mile x 40 miles^2 = 12,cheap air jordan shoes,800 inches/12 inches per foot = 1066.67 feet

The target hidden height, or the height hidden by the horizon, stands at about 336.6 feet using the numbers provided, including Apple Pie Hill's elevation. Couple that with the makeup of Philadelphias skyline which includes about 30 buildings standing taller than 400 feet, including the 975-foot Comcast Center and 945-foot One Liberty Place and it becomes a little more clear why Philadelphia is visible from the New Jersey Pine Barrens.

"If I go to the top of the Comcast Center, the horizon appears really far away," Pitts said. "Much farther than it appears at sea level, because your elevation allows you to see much farther out. At 205 feet above sea level, that disappearing point will be much farther away."

Despite the amount of evidence working against B.o.B. here, Pitts doesnt expect deGrasse Tyson to walk away from this battle with a solid win. In fact, he said, it might be better if we just ignored the whole thing altogether.

Mahe’s family, Taysom’s injury. But what’s cool is to see how close-knit of a group that we are and to feel of that family love that we have. We’re there for each other through the highs and the lows. That’s what matters most.” Coach Kalani Sitake liked what he saw from the seniors this season. “What’s great about the seniors is, they found motivation to play for people other than themselves, cheap air jordans,” Sitake said. “They wanted to play for the other seniors, their teammates, the fans and especially for Reno and his family and the hardships they're going through. Senior leadership has been huge for us. To see them end it with how they’ve been this whole season, there’s not a selfish bone in those guys’ bodies. It’s awesome as a head coach to see them lead and sacrifice and only care about the team and other people. It’s been refreshing for me to see.” Williams, who missed the previous two games due to injury, rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown against the Aggies. “He’s got tons of experience and that was a key for us. I think he was a little bit rusty, not being able to play the last couple of weeks,” Sitake said of Williams. “It was nice to have him out there, and now he’ll be able to heal a little more so we can get ready for the bowl game. It always helps having one of the best players on the team playing, cheap air jordan shoes, and he’s also one of our leaders. He’s one of our captains. That was huge for us.” After the game, Williams honored Mahe by presenting him with the game ball. “Reno wants to focus on the seniors and the team, but it was beautiful to hear Jamaal speak so emotionally about the team and how connected he is to this program and then to give the game ball to Reno and his family,” Sitake said. “They’re going through a hard time. I love seeing our players having so much charity in their hearts for others. They have reached out to the community and to a lot of people who have had a lot of hardships in life, and they’re just trying to help them out while they’re playing football. It’s been fun to watch.” “When they hurt, we hurt,” Williams told reporters about his concern for the Mahe family. Williams enjoyed playing at LaVell Edwards Stadium one last time with his teammates and in front of the fans. “It’s always great going out there and playing football, cheap retro jordans, just being out there with your brothers and playing 100 percent. I’m grateful for them to play this last game with everything they had with a whole bunch of effort,” Williams said. “I’m just grateful to be on this team and have teammates like that. I’m grateful for the fans and the support they’ve given me for everything I’ve been through, ups and downs and trials. This place is one of a kind. It has one-of-a-kind people that care about you and they really want to see you succeed. ? It’s just great to have a whole bunch of players from different backgrounds. I love them. They will forever be my brothers, way after football is done.” As for Hill, he is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his elbow Monday. His status for the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 21 is unclear. “It’s super sad to see a friend go down. We obviously feel bad,” said Mangum. "After the game, cheap jordan shoes, we were talking with him. New, entirely professional, real cheap jordans retro, and a child of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philadelphia Symphonic Choir would seem to be much-needed good news on the choral landscape. But so far in its formation, some Philadelphia vocal freelancers are experiencing consternation or even heartbreak at how it's being handled. The idea couldn't be more promising. "We want it to be the leading outlet for choral-orchestral repertoire," said Joe Miller, who is founding the group and is also director of the Westminster Choir and the Westminster Symphonic Choir in Princeton. "I'm so excited about building professional opportunity for singers. . . . I hope this will be an outlet for any singer pursuing that." The Philadelphia Orchestra formed its own chorus for the 1916 U.S. premiere of the Mahler Symphony No. 8 under Leopold Stokowski. And the sketchy documentation of the choral scene suggests this may be the first time since then that a new group has been formed by the orchestra with aspirations of permanence. Like many ensembles, cheap jordans for sale, the orchestra has relied on existing organizations in recent decades. For many years, cheap jordans online, the preferred chorus was the partly professional Philadelphia Singers Chorale, which ceased operation in 2015 after 43 years because of financial challenges. Some, however, see the new chorus as yet another step in the decline of freelance opportunities for singers in Philadelphia since the 2008 recession. Complaints - many anonymous, because freelancers don't want to alienate future opportunities - come down to low pay. Some singers who auditioned in May and were offered positions in July - attracted by the prestige of Kimmel Center performances of Carmina Burana under Cristian Macelaru Dec. 8-10, Handel's Messiah Dec. 18, or the Mahler Symphony No. 3 May 18-21 under Yannick Nézet-Séguin - just can't afford it. One is bass Milo Morris, cheap jordan shoes, who had to say no to the December Carmina Burana. "I could accept this offer to return home to 'my' orchestra, or I could turn down this insultingly low-paying gig . . . while opening up my schedule for other opportunities during the Christmas season," he wrote in an email. Some singers were offered $400 for rehearsals and performances, but Morris was offered $375 in a tiered payment system. Some singers say that's a morale killer. "From what I've heard . . . few professional singers are accepting this," said Gail Lopez-Henriquez, the local attorney for the American Guild of Musical Artists. "They aren't going to have the same quality that we've had in past." The past she refers to is the Philadelphia Singers Chorale, whose 2013 performance of Carmina Burana with the Philadelphia Orchestra yielded $335.16 for rehearsals and warm-up and $336.60 for three performances. Total: $671.76. Clearly, cheap air jordan shoes, the situation has hit a nerve among Philadelphia choristers feeling increasingly devalued in their own community. Many who are signing on are recent graduates of Westminster College in Princeton - Miller admitted he has a fair number - with the implications of outsourcing to less-expensive singers in New Jersey. But the situation may be intractable - between singers who want to continue making a living as freelancers and an orchestra under pressure to minimize expenses. Though opera stars are among the most highly paid musicians on earth, choristers - some of whom have chosen family life over a potential solo career - tend to be taken for granted, whether in churches

Organ donors who died of drug overdoses in the extended Philadelphia region have risen more than fourfold in just five years, a small comfort for families who lost loved ones but were able to help someone else live. Graphic: Organ Donations After Drug Deaths Are Rising Fast Because addiction especially to heroin and prescription painkillers is rising fastest among young adults, cheap air jordans, fatalities tend to mean more and healthier organs available for transplant. Younger people also are more likely to be organ donors. Families, who often have seen their daughters or sons struggle for years, relapsing again and again, are more likely to authorize donations than are families of people who died of other causes, records indicate. "To have his last act not be a drug overdose but to help save somebodys life, that helps write the end of his story" with something good, said Richard Hasz, a vice president who oversees day to day operations for the Gift of Life Donor Program, which coordinates transplants in eastern Pennsylvania, South Jersey, and Delaware. Charles Grugan, 33, who died of a heroin overdose five years ago last Sunday at his parents' house in Wayne, had made that decision on his own when he first got his driver's license while attending Archbishop Carroll High School. "I remember him coming home with his picture," said his sister Carolyn Grugan Noll. "He was very proud of that, proud to have gotten his driver's license and proud to be an organ donor. . . . I think most people, when they sign up, think it is the right thing to do but they don't think they will be called upon to act on that." When doctors told family members that Grugan was brain-dead, they asked about organ donation. It was a matter of "how can we take this dark situation and turn it into something spectacular," his sister said. His heart, liver, and two kidneys were recovered and transplanted into three recipients. The family has exchanged letters with all of them through the Gift of Life program. A Facebook page in Charles Grugan's name keeps his legacy alive, and encourages donations. The trend of increasing donations due to drug overdose fatalities is being seen across the country, to varying degrees. Nationally, organ donors who died of drug abuse increased about 250 percent from 2010 through 2015. Still, theres no sign that the supply of organs for transplant is keeping up with the demand from aging Americans and those with chronic diseases. "The number of people on the waiting list is increasing faster than the number of donors, even with the increases related to overdoses," said David Klassen,www.yourcellan.com, chief medical officer at the United Network for Organ Sharing, which tracks and manages organ donations in the United States. More than 5,600 people are on transplant waiting lists just at Gift of Life, the largest regional program in the country. Organs were recovered from 483 deceased donors last year, including 81 who died of drug-related causes. The trend is accelerating, however, with 78 of the region's 387 organ donors during the first nine months of 2016 the result of drug use. Those fatalities, jordans for cheap, categorized as "drug intoxication," could involve any kind of drug, legal or not, including alcohol. But the overdose trends in recent years have been almost entirely driven by opioids although the increase in organ donations has far exceeded even the huge rises in drug death rates. No one knows why donation rates vary so much around the country. Drug overdose fatality rates differ substantially as well but the trends don't necessarily match. Hasz, of the Gift of Life program, speculated that "selection bias" might be involved in some regions. Here, he said, organs from people who were drug users had always been considered for donation, while they might not have been in some other regions. The average age of a donor who died of drug intoxication is 32, he said, compared with an overall average in the mid-40s, and many of their organs may be more viable. Opioids like heroin and prescription pain relievers are deadly because too high a dose stops the breathing reflex, not because they damage organs. Drug users do have higher rates of hepatitis C,cheap jordan shoes, which is caught during the intensive screening process. But those organs are given to the substantial number of people on waiting lists who are already infected, Hasz said. And a pilot program at the University of Pennsylvania is transplanting the organs into uninfected people, who are then treated for the infection afterward. In New England, organ donors who died of drug use have increased nearly ninefold in five years twice as fast as in the Philadelphia region and nearly four times as fast as the national average. The New England numbers include a man named Chris LePage. On his last day alive, in June 2015, his father, Colin, rode waves of hope and despair. It started when he found Chris, 30,cheap jordans free shipping, at home after an apparent overdose. Paramedics rushed him by helicopter to one of Bostons flagship medical centers. Doctors revived Chris heart, but struggled to stabilize his temperature and blood pressure. At some point, a doctor or nurse mentioned to LePage that his son had agreed to be an organ donor. "There was no urgency or, Hey, you need to do this. I could see genuine concern and sadness," LePage said, his voice quavering. The next morning, after another round of tests showed no signs of brain activity, LePage said goodbye to the son who had been revived but was not fully alive. "I sat in a chair with him and held his hand," LePage said. "It wasnt clinical. It didnt feel like someones gaining something here. I knew that someone was, and thats comforting, that someone else has been able to have a little piece of my son and some of their pain is not what it used to be." Chris liver is now working in the body of a 62-year-old pastor. This story includes reporting by Martha Beginger of WBUR in Boston. Her work is part of a partnership that includes WBUR, NPR and Kaiser Health News. This story and accompanying graphic have been revised to clarify that the numbers used to represent the trend reflect deceased donors. Multiple organs may be recovered for transplant from each donor. Tom Sauerman and his wife, Sue, are still active in East Falls and continue to be members of the East Falls Village seniors club. He is a former president of the East Falls Community Council.

But after 35 years, they made a deliberate decision to sell their beloved home and move into a continuing-care retirement community, Cathedral Village, not far away.

"We moved 21/2 years ago, when I was 77 and my wife was 74, and we were both in good health," Tom Sauerman recalls.

Their journey offers a road map for those contemplating independent- or assisted-living facilities or retirement homes.

Start by developing a plan and a timetable; allow up to two years to complete the process. When selling a house, engage a real estate agent who knows your neighborhood well, and don't overvalue the property. And finally, Sauerman advises, "start decluttering - now!"

The couple recognized opposing forces at work. One was the urge to stay put.

"We were in good health, so there was no rush. We could wait on selling the house until the market improved, put off all that downsizing work. Our friends thought we were crazy to leave before needing to go anywhere," he says.

The other was their desire to go forward in life.

"Do it while you're in control of everything," he says. "Don't wait until you have to depend on your kids to help sell the house, make the move, or care for the remaining spouse. The sooner you get out from under house and property care, the sooner you can be free of those expenses and concerns, the sooner you can really enjoy retirement and have the time to do what gives you pleasure."

Financial advisers are a must when shopping for a retirement-home option.

"When I have a client who's looking at a retirement facility, I tell them that they should insist on getting the financials from that place," says Mark Blair, founder of Blair Wealth Management, a registered investment adviser based in Newtown Square.

"People sometimes buy into communities which are poorly managed or go bankrupt. Make sure to have someone with a finance background analyze the establishment's financial records and ask: Are they overly leveraged? Does the retirement place have a lot of debt? Or are they in good shape, cheap air jordan shoes?"

Blair has personally dealt with these questions: A sibling with multiple sclerosis lives in a nursing home locally, at a cost of about $13,000 a month.

"Any institution should provide you audited financials," he says. "If they won't provide it, look elsewhere. Why should they hide that from you?"

Costs range from $40,000 to $100,000 a year for an independent living community, depending on how upscale you want it to be, says Blair.

A continuing-care retirement community usually requires a purchase of about $400,000, plus maintenance fees.

Assisted-living facilities average yearly costs of $44,000 to $53,000, Blair estimates.

The Sauermans looked at more than a dozen places before settling on Cathedral Village in Philadelphia.

"The first one we liked, we requested its financial reports and sent them to our banker son. He and a nursing-home specialist in his bank's commercial loan department reviewed them. The facility was heavily financed and could result in sizable annual increases of the monthly fees," Sauerman says.

Coping with the clutter

Decluttering "holds people back from starting to act on their future," Sauerman says.

After 57 years of marriage, the couple had every closet jammed. "Today, we live in a two-bedroom apartment and have yet to find something that we 'need' from our former home," he says.

They began with a "men's weekend" with two sons and a grandson to initiate the decluttering while Sue Sauerman visited a friend. Tom chose to attack the worst of it: an attic full of clothes, real cheap jordans retro, some of which his wife wore in high school. A local theater's wardrobe mistress took some; the rest went to Goodwill.

The Sauermans invited their entire family the following Christmas for a final visit to the homestead, flying in everyone from Colorado, cheap jordans free shipping, South Dakota, cheap jordan shoes, Illinois, and New York. The couple put everything in the basement and told the relatives to take their pick.

To their shock, little was claimed. "Our choices of china, pictures, knickknacks, furniture, all that, cheap jordans online, were as different to them as our parents' and grandparents' possessions were to us when we were their age," he says.

A long process

They reviewed everything in three passes over many months. First, they threw out things they didn't want to take with them and that were of little value. Next, they sorted things of enough value to be sold. Then they faced the reality of that two-bedroom apartment. Valuable items went to an auction house; the piano, to a piano dealer.

"It's painful to realize that your family members don't value your treasures as much as you do. It's unsettling to put them up for sale at a tenth of their original price. . . . If you try to get what you consider as 'full value,' you'll go crazy," Sauerman says.

Instead, focus on the pleasure and use that these things provided, he says. "You can't move forward with all this 'stuff' holding you back."

Svetlichnaya's Philly-shot comic book horror film, 'Breakfast,' sets premiere

Aleksandra Svetlichnaya, Philly-based director of "Breakfast."

Want more Philly-based films? Aleksandra Svetlichnaya is serving up "Breakfast"!
"Breakfast," a new short film, real cheap jordans retro, is having a premiere screening at Tattooed Mom on Friday Nov. 18. It was shot locally in Philadelphia and Bucks County-including a portion of the film being shot at Ontario Street Comics ( 2235 E Ontario St.), where M. Night Shyamalan also filmed Unbreakable. The short also utilized local cast and crew.
"It's about 30 minutes," said Svetlichnaya, who directed the film. "It's longer than it's predecessor, 'Dinner.' 'Breakfast' is the next course!"
"It's the same main characters, but we're also introducing some new and exciting characters. So you don't have to to see the first film to enjoy the second."
Svetlichnaya. said that "Breakfast" tells the tale of characters who set out to find an exclusive edition of their favorite comic book and the story escalates from there,yourcellan.com.
"They find something they would have never expected," she said. "This sets up more and more events they could never have predicted-and they haven't even had breakfast yet!"

Svetlichnaya says "Breakfast" is a mix of horror, comedy and drama-and that she decided to shoot in Philly because she grew up here after immigrating from Ukraine.
"I feel like Philly has a lot to offer-and I don't feel it's necessarily recognized,www.yourcellan.com," she said. "People always think movies mean shooting in New York or Los Angeles. Philly gets overlooked for reasons that have nothing to do with the talented people working here.
You can also count Svetlichnaya among those who are in favor of "The Twisted Twins," Jen and Sylvia Soska, cheap real jordans, directing "Deadpool 2."
"I think it would be amazing," she said. "I remember when I first read that Tim Miller (director of the original Deadpool) dropped out, I posted that I would like to give it a shot because having a woman direct 'Deadpool 2' would send shockwaves.
"But having those two women direct it, would be really amazing," she said. "Because after all the hype, I wasn't really shocked by the first Deadpool. I thought after all the hype, and stuff, I was just expecting something really mind-blowing - and to me it wasn't.
"Maybe its because I have a European background and the nudity and all that is just not as taboo there. So I wasn't as shocked as a lot of people.

"But having those two women behind it all is actually one of the biggest shockers that they could do," she added. "I would be extremely excited to see where they'd take the character."
